They asked a fundamentalist redneck who lived in Louisiana what his opinion on gay marriage was, what did they think he was going to say? I mean it was pretty shitty of him to group it with beastiality and I don't agree with his opinion but you know what? It's America, people can have any believe they want no matter how much I disagree with them. But seriously I'm tired of every post on my facebook page being about Duck Dynasty.

This is one of the reasons why I don't use Facebook. I don't care what you're having for dinner, I don't want to know how jacked up your life is, and while I accept and appreciate your religion and spirituality, I don't need to read how blessed your life is and how thankful to God you are.

But you're right by asking, what did they expect him to say? Either some exec really dropped the ball by not having him sign away the right to speak like that or when they signed their contract, nobody expected the show to take off like it did.

I don't even really like the show. Something like a chicken restaurant and gay marriages, blah. I tried watching some of turtle man guy, and it got stale for me as well. Although I'm so cheap I won't pay for cable, so I don't even get to watch good stuff like races.

Glad you're being clear on "grouped with" vs. "compared to". A narrow, but perhaps important distinction: it wasn't a clear connection of the two, but a general assortment of "things Phil Robertson doesn't think are moral" which also included cheating.

Plenty of people think it's an absolutely awful thing for him to say, but "Phil Robertson says homosexuality is bestiality" is putting words in his mouth, which I've seen quite a lot. Unless you also believe he thinks cheating is equal in scale, type, etc. to bestiality as well, which it's pretty plain he doesn't.

I'm gay and Christian and in a monogamous relationship. So I'm caught totally in the middle on this one.

I think people are overreacting, of course, on both sides. But it's actually been a really good opportunity for me to dialogue with people about these things, too. Those mature enough for such dialogue have made the conversation worthwhile.

I'm what's referred to as a deist, I believe that there is a higher power, however I don't really follow any particular religion's rules but rather follow 3 basic rules;

1) Don't be a dick.

2) Try to be the best person you can possibly be.

3) Help others that need help.

So I have no real reason to be for or against it other than my personal judgement and beliefs of what is right. Unfortunately in Louisiana there aren't too many people that aren't extremely fundamentalist christians so not much dialogue going on as much as people posting "Fuck A&E".

Do you think the guy might be repressing feelings? Seems like most of the super anti gay guys are repressing something. There have been way more "family values" politicians who are anti gay that got caught having secret sex with men than liberal politicians who aren't anti gay.

I'm straight and have a built in distrust for anti gay people. I feel like they hate some part of themselves. Because if they didn't why would they hate gays so much? I don't care who people love. If a guy loves a guy then great. If a girl loves a girl then great. What does it have to do with me? I don't see how religion can make someone hate. Jesus taught everyone to love each other, not hate. Those who hate are not happy with something within themselves.

I can't even begin to speculate. It'd be neat and tidy if he were a closet case. But sometimes fear and bigotry come from the unknown and not from within. His comments in GQ seem to me to be more in line with the former. But I have no real definitive idea.

His GQ comments were also tempered with a "love 'em anyway" backpedal. I haven't heard other comments that have supposedly surfaced, though.

Yeah could be from plain old ignorance. Which is just so crazy to me. I don't care where someone lives. It's 2013. It's so obvious how wrong it is to judge others.

And it's so tiresome too. Who even has the energy to rally against those they don't agree with? Live your own life and stop spouting your outdated beliefs. Those that are anti any group of people need to retreat to their caves.

Here's my take on things:

Church of Christ and Pentecostals are two of the most fundamental (read as "follow everything the bible says to the 'T'") of all Protestant sects. I'm more shocked that this is the first time one of the cast members said something like this to a journalist.

I don't have a problem with him lumping all the sex-related sins together that he has been taught for his entire life. He went off on heterosexual promiscuity too. The real issue I have is that A&E knew their beliefs (HOW IN THE HELL COULD THEY NOT?!) and now proclaim that they are shocked and saddened by them when one of them actually opens their mouths about it.

I know many parts of Louisiana well. Northern Louisiana is THE hotbed for this kind of religious teachings in the state (Southern Louisiana, or "Acadiana", is where the Catholic Cajuns live). If he thinks that being gay is wrong, as long as he doesn't openly discriminate against homosexuamals, let him believe it. Plenty of people probably think that something I'm doing is wrong too, but whatever. I wouldn't be too broken up about it if I were you (and you aren't).

Now what he said about blacks being happy before welfare... THAT, in my mind, is a big ass problem.

I don't watch the show and have never spent a second of my life on Facebook, but I haven't been able to watch the news for days without hearing about this story, so curiosity led me to read the article. After seeing your comments about how much he "hates" homosexuals I went back and reread it to ensure I hadn't missed something. However I still couldn't find anything he said about hating, or even disliking, anyone. He was talked about sin and how he thinks that homosexuality is a sin just like promiscuity. So does this mean he hates people who have had premarital sex too? How bout folks who are guilty of infidelity? No, of course he doesn't, and neither does it mean he hates gay people.

The 'Phil Robertson hates gay people' narrative is being promulgated by those who will not miss a single opportunity to attack anyone who's opinions they disagree with. They demand tolerance for their actions, but let someone espouse a thought they disagree with and they will spare nothing to brand that person as a bigot and a homophobe in an effort to destroy their reputation and silence them.

Each time they destroy one of their perceived enemies how many more are they silencing? And what is the next step? You yourself demanded that those who hold opinions you don't like should "retreat back to their caves". We have reached the point where we now have unofficial thought police, how far are we from the precipice of reeducation camp?

I don't think what he said was a big deal. They asked him his belief on homo sexuality. He doesn't believe it to be moral. He didn't engage in prohibited speech by inciting people to violence, saying "all the gays should be killed" or something. The man is allowed to have an opinion. I thought 'Merica was all about freedom. Especially freedom of opinion.

I was raised a fundie Christian who was taught that being gay was one of the worst things ever. When I came to terms with my sexuality, I threw myself into an ex-gay ministry that didn't work. Went to therapy (not just because of my sexuality, but also to deal with the fallout from my catastrophically crazy family - they were supposedly connected, you see) and I grew and healed a lot, but my sexuality didn't budge.

I converted to Orthodoxy at about the time every fundie/evangelical church started freaking out about gay marriage the first time (2004-05ish). I was encouraged that I wasn't worse than anyone else, just that I had to be celibate forever. I joined a monastery 3 years ago and got hit on by the abbot. Then I changed monasteries and they tried to starve, work, exorcise, and then drug the gay out of me. So I left.

I discovered that I'd done pretty much everything people said God wanted me to do to change and resist and I just discovered it was a lot of bullshit based on inaccurate readings and understandings of scripture, tradition, and humanity. As well as bigotry, fear, and hatred the size of the frigging moon. It wasn't actually working for me, no matter how hard I tried. I'd been bullied and driven to the brink of suicide. My faith was in shambles. But all along the way, I had these experiences of God. These little miracles and ways He reached through all the crazy to sustain me and show me enough love to keep going. I couldn't blame Him for the misguided BS others inflicted. That's on them. I knew I couldn't throw away what I knew to my core.

In the 5 months since I've been back, I've come out, met an awesome guy (also a Christian), been excommunicated, and found a really great support system in my close friends and a whole network of other gay Christians (gaychristian.net and other places). In the process, I found a renewed desire to pray and grow in my relationship with God. I've been able to find more of His love. So it's been fruitful.

So yeah. Now I have an experience and understanding of both sides of the issue. Lots of good, honest, loving people on both sides. Lots of pain, anger, and ugliness, too. Lots to pray for and get involved with.
